THE ART OF PARENTING
KNOWING
NOTHING
Do you ever remember a time when it was the first time ya did something. you know like the first time you rode a bike without training wheels or when you started something new on your job maybe the first time ya used a computer? Well when you (being an adult) start a new thing, like a new job you have years of comparable activities to draw references from. Do you remember how you felt lost and alone and kind scared and excited and nervous. Now if you feel like that even with all your years of experience just try to imagine how we feel.
We everyday, in every
thing we do, are doing things we have never done before and everything
around us is new and exciting and draws our attention and stirs the curiosity within me.
I don't have years
of experiences to draw on, I KNOW NOTHING, I KNOW NOTHING, I KNOW NOTHING. Most of the time I sit observing, I see how you act, I mimic how you act and we get in trouble and wonder why???
example; my sister
had a son when he was two years old he was sitting at the table in the
high chair. His aunt gave him an empty beer bottle to play with while
they were playing cards. He was acting like the people he was watching
and trying to drink from the empty bottle. They laughed at how cute it
was to see him stuggle to lift the bottle and he giggled for their enjoyment.
It was cute to see, then three hours later when they are in the living
room watching tv, the baby goes into the kitchen sees a half finished beer
on the table, grabs it, drinks some, the bottle falls over spills beer everywhere, mother comes in and says "bad baby don't touch nonono".
WHAT DO YOU MEAN NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
See we know nothing if you let me play with a beer bottle I am going to think it's okay. If you say no, I'm going to be confused. I only know what I'm taught by you. If you say one thing one time and another thing another time how in the hell am I suppossed to learn anything??????? I see all you do I may not understand everything but I see like when you lie, or you steal something, or smoke, or drink or pop pills, or jay walk, or speed if your doing one thing and telling me something else I SEE. If you tell me one thing and do another I will see you as undependable. I will not show you respect and as I grow up I will show you less and less respect. Mostly, I won't know your truth from your lies. You see we really do no nothing, if you would see this and allow us to learn from experience instead of from what rules you want me to follow, I may see your mistakes, but I will know you, like me, are just learning to.
